Objectives:
Does influenza vaccination reduce mortality risk among adult and elderly patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
Study design:
This review article included 6 observational studies.
Results and conclusions:
The investigators found influenza vaccination was associated with a 46% lower mortality rate [MH-OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.40 to 0.74, p 0.001] among adult and elderly patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
The investigators found patients who received influenza vaccination showed a 11% lower risk of hospitalization for pneumonia [MH-OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.80 to 0.98, p = 0.18].
A sensitivity analysis using fixed effect model confirmed the results [MH-OR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.87 to 0.96, p = 0.001].
The investigators concluded this meta-analysis are clinically relevant and support the recommendation for all persons with diabetes to receive influenza vaccination.
