COPD is associated with negative COVID-19 related health outcomes

Objectives:
Several underlying diseases have been associated with unfavorable COVID-19 related outcomes including asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), however few studies have reported risks that are adjusted for confounding variables. Therefore, this review article has been conducted.

Are COPD and asthma associated with COVID-19 related hospital admission, intensive care unit (ICU) admission and mortality?

Study design:
This review article included 37 studies with a total of 1,678,992 participants.

All findings were of a moderate level of certainty.

Results and conclusions:
The investigators found subjects with asthma had a non-significantly reduced risk of 9% for COVID-19 hospitalsation [pooled OR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.76 to 1.09].
Non-significantly because OR of 1 was found in the 95% CI of 0.76 to 1.09. OR of 1 means no risk/association.

The investigators found subjects with COPD had a significantly increased risk of 37% for COVID-19 hospitalsation [pooled OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.29 to 1.46].
Significant because OR of 1 was not found in the 95% CI of 1.29 to 1.46. OR of 1 means no risk/association.

The investigators found subjects with asthma had a non-significantly reduced risk of 11% for COVID-19 ICU admission [pooled OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.74 to 1.07].
Non-significantly means that there is no association with a 95% confidence.

The investigators found subjects with COPD had a significantly increased risk of 22% for COVID-19 ICU admission [pooled OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.04 to 1.42].
Significant means that there is an association with a 95% confidence.
The investigators found subjects with asthma had a non-significantly reduced risk of 12% for COVID-19 mortality [pooled OR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.77 to 1.01].

The investigators found subjects with COPD had a significantly increased risk of 25% for COVID-19 mortality [pooled OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.08 to 1.34].
Significantly means it can be said with a 95% confidence that COPD really increased the risk of COVID-19 mortality with 25%.

The investigators found, further, the pooled risk of mortality as measured via Cox regression was 0.93 [95% CI = 0.87 to 1.00] for asthma and 1.30 [95% CI = 1.17 to 1.44] for COPD.

The investigators concluded COPD is associated with COVID-19 related hospital admission, ICU admission and mortality. Asthma is not associated with negative COVID-19 related health outcomes.
