Melatonin supplements have positive effects on sleep quality in adults with metabolic disorders

Objectives:
Do melatonin supplements improve sleep quality as assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in adults with various diseases?

Study design:
This review article included a total of 23 RCTs.

Results and conclusions:
The investigators found that melatonin supplements had significant effects on sleep quality as assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) [WMD = -1.24, 95% CI = -1.77 to -0.71, p = 0.000, I2 = 80.7%, p = 0.000].

COVID-19 children are potential carriers, like adults and can transmit the infection among the population

Objectives:
What are the clinical features and laboratory findings in COVID-19 children?

Study design:
This review article included a total of 32 articles.
Out of the 32 publications, 3 were performed in Iran, the United States and Spain and the other 29 studies were conducted by Chinese researchers.
The total sample size consisted of 759 children, of whom 399 were male.

Results and conclusions:

Omega-3 fatty acids consumption reduce recurrent venous thromboembolism

Objectives:
Is fish or omega-3 fatty acids consumption associated with a lower risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE)?

Study design:
This review article included 8 prospective cohort studies.
The follow-up duration ranged from 0.5 to 19 years.
The sample size ranged from 595 to 80,263.
The fish and omega-3 fatty acids consumption was assessed by food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in all studies.

COVID-19 patients benefit from remdesivir

Objectives:
Do COVID-19 patients benefit from the treatment with remdesivir?

Study design:
This review article included 3 RCTs with a total of 1,691 COVID-19 patients.

Results and conclusions:
The investigators found the odds for mechanical ventilation (MV) or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) following treatment was significantly lower in the remdesivir group compared to the control group [OR = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.34 to 0.69, p 0.001].

0.5 to 6 g/d taurine supplementation reduces total cholesterol and triglyceride in patients with liver dysregulation

Objectives:
Taurine plays a pivotal role in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, blood pressure homeostasis and obesity largely due to its cytoprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. Despite promising data from animal studies in this scenario, the efficacy of taurine supplementation in human studies has been inconsistent. Therefore, this review article has been conducted.

Does taurine supplementation lower blood pressure and improve the lipid profile in patients with liver dysregulation?

Hypocalcemia is associated with poor outcome in COVID-19 patients

Objectives:
Is hypocalcemia associated with poor outcome in COVID-19 patients?

Study design:
This review article included 7 studies with 2,032 COVID-19 patients.

Results and conclusions:
The investigators found the prevalence of hypocalcemia in the included studies was 55% [95% CI = 23 to 87%]. The incidence of poor outcome in this review article was 26%.

Nasopharyngeal swabs remain gold standard for diagnosis of COVID-19

Objectives:
Nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs are considered the highest-yield sample for diagnostic testing for respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. The need to increase capacity for SARS-CoV-2 testing in a variety of settings, combined with shortages of sample collection supplies, have motivated a search for alternative sample types with high sensitivity. Therefore, this review article has been conducted.

Osteoporosis

Scientific studies (review articles) on the relationship between diet/nutrients and osteoporosis prevention:
One swallow does not make a summer. A famous Dutch saying that could not be any more obvious. Just because one single scientific study about a certain topic makes certain claims, it does not necessarily mean it is true. On the other hand, a review article (a collection of scientific studies on a certain topic) of randomized, placebo-controlled double blind clinical trials (RCTs) will answer the following question:
